How to Lay Out a Cabinet Run with the 3-Inch Increment System

When planning your new cabinets, accurate measurements and smart layout choices make all the difference. Our cabinets are designed in standardized 3-inch width increments from 12", 15", 18", 21", and up to 36" allowing you to create a functional, custom-fit design without awkward gaps or excessive filler pieces.

Step-by-Step Layout Guide
  • Measure Your Wall Space
Record the total wall length where the cabinets will go. Include notes on appliances, sinks, windows, and other obstacles.
  • Determine Start and End Points
Decide where your cabinet run begins and ends, considering any necessary fillers or spacers for a clean fit. You will want at least a 1” filler next to a wall to allow easy installation of the cabinets and clearance for the door to swing open.
  • Select Cabinet Sizes
Choose from the available 3-inch increment widths so the total matches or nearly matches your wall length without exceeding it.
  • Fill in the Gaps
If the width doesn’t work out evenly, add a filler strip to complete the run. Our filler strips are 6” wide and can be ripped down to size as required.
  • Place Specialty Units First
Position fixed cabinets, like sink bases, first. Then fill the remaining space with standard modular sizes.
  • Check Functionality
Ensure cabinet doors and drawers open freely, that spacing works with your appliances, and the overall setup fits your daily needs and design goals.

Final Step: Visualize and Confirm

Before ordering, use a diagram or design software to map out your cabinet sequence. This ensures everything aligns properly and functions as intended.

By using the 3-inch increment system, you get the flexibility of a tailored layout with the simplicity of modular design providing a professional, seamless look that maximizes both space and style.
